Hi,

Just to follow up on Adam's comments, the missing _FillValue is indeed the problem. Or rather,
its that the default _FillValue is not the same as your data, which looking at it, I presume is "-999.0"(?)

Just add the line:

  f@_FillValue = -999.0

after you read the ascii dataset.
