Hi Rashmi

For starters, you don’t want 1.6.x of libpng. On our “building from source” page, we recommend 1.2.x.

You can see the versions of everything we used for NCL V6.2.0 (which are close to what we used for V6.1.2) at:

http://www.ncl.ucar.edu/Download/build_from_src.shtml

Just look at the bulleted list at the top, and the version numbers are listed in parentheses after each package.

But, this doesn’t explain the screen freeze and crash. What kind of system do you have and how are you installing all of these packages?

Did you actually try to run NCL before you downloaded all these packages? Usually, some version of these should already exist on your system.
