numerical scheme used in z2geouv

Hello, I have two quick questions on the function z2geouv.

1). What is the finite difference method behind the function z2geouv?

2). Can it be exploited to calculate the ocean surface geostrophic velocity
from SSHA(sea surface height anomaly)? I think it probably can do this
job, but I'd like to learn some details on this function to be reassured.
