I'm using Ubuntu Server 64 bit version 7.10.
How do you run the display interactively or instrument print statements to
figure out where its going?
Sorry I'm new to NCAR (I'm not a new programmer though) so I'm still
learning how this thing works.

What's your operating system and distribution?
If Xeyes and xterm run, you've got a graphical environment. What it
sounds like is that you might not have access to the display when you
run ncl.
Have you tried running it interactively? Have you instrumented with
print statements to tell you where it's falling over?
