convective precipitation rates

To Whom it May Concern,
I am currently working with convective precipitation rates in a NetCDF file and
was wondering the area these rates are valid for. Are the rates in m/s per
square meter, square km, or unit area in general? Any feedback is much
appreciated! Thanks
