Basically, multiple passes are made over the grid space.
When successive iterations yield a difference less that
the tolerance, the passes are terminated.
"variable dependent": Depending on the ultimate goal a high
or low tolerance could be used. For, say, geopotential height the
tolerance may could be larger than (say) specific humidity.
