tolerance parameter for poisson_grid_fill()

Could someone offer an explanation of the "tolerance" parameter used
by the poisson_grid_fill() function? The documentation mentions that
it's "variable dependent" but doesn't offer any further details. Any
recommendations on how to decide what to use here?
