Histogram label bar

I want to use a histogram as a label bar on an X-Y plot.

I've figured out how to overplot a suitably-formatted histogram on an X-Y plot,
but if it try to place it in the usual place below the plot, it gets cut off by
the bounding box.

How can I increase the bounding box on the X-Y plot to allow extra space
underneath? Better yet, is there a way to get a standard label bar on an X-Y
plot, so that I could overplot on that?
